Summary
Wu Gang, an usher at a Shanghai movie theatre, is stood up by a woman he had arranged to meet at a park. For much of the film, he continues to wait, looking like a bee, decked out in sunglasses and a yellow and black sweater. As he waits, he observes people in the park who remind him of some of his theatre patrons. Watching with him are two angels, who enter Wu Gang's dreams and fantasies about the love lives of the theatre patrons. Wu Gang has an eye ailment: he has rainbow-colors in one eye and can't look into the light. The sunglasses, the dark theatre, and a flashlight suit him. As Wu Gang imagines and re-imagines the theatre patron's love lives, he finds himself desiring love more and more. He even imagines a romantic encounter that sadly leaves him still alone. The film asks, Where does love come from and when will it come? This meditation suggests an answer that Wu Gang finds comforting and even healing. Screened at the Berlin Film Festival.
