After reading a book written by a 12th century ascetic, Pari, a student of literature and theater at one of Tehran's universities, becomes obsessed with plumbing the depths of the spiritual and mystical dimension. Pari's obsession becomes so intense that she begins to lose all interest in the outside world and even entertains thoughts of committing suicide, as her elder brother Assad had done. The young woman's remaining brother (who also had to overcome his own obsession with mysticism) tries to bring Pari back from the verge of a nervous breakdown. The director Maherjui confidently tackles psychological issues, as he does in the other films in the nineties trilogy (Sara in 1993 and Leila in 1996. The film is loosely based on Salinger's novel Franny and Zooey, though Pari's spiritual quest of Sufism, religion and literature makes for a singularly Persian mystique.
